Artists of the Year – Connie M. & Alice H.

Show on Display in the South Gallery until Feb. 10th

In 2023, the Johnson County Art Guild experienced a historic moment when it awarded not one, but two exceptional local artists with the esteemed Artist of the Year Award. Connie May and Alice Hoener shared this prestigious recognition, marking the first time in the Guild’s history that such a tie occurred. Both May and Hoener were celebrated for their outstanding talent and significant contributions to the local art scene.

The exhibition, held at Cleburne’s JN Long Cultural Arts Center, served as a testament to the remarkable creativity of these two artists. Showcasing an eclectic mix of paintings, sculptures, and other mediums, the display provided insight into the unique artistic styles and perspectives of May and Hoener. From May’s captivating watercolor landscapes to Hoener’s expressive portraits, each piece resonated with passion, skill, and individuality.

May’s journey in art began with the encouragement of her mother and evolved over the years, leading her to explore new techniques and mediums such as watercolor under the mentorship of Art Guild teacher Ann Winchester. Hoener, on the other hand, discovered her passion for drawing at an early age and reignited her artistic pursuits upon retirement, finding inspiration in the vibrant arts community of Johnson County.

The reception held at the JN Long Cultural Arts Center was a joyous occasion, bringing together art enthusiasts and supporters to celebrate the achievements of May and Hoener. As visitors explored the exhibit, they were treated to a diverse range of artistic expressions, from May’s serene landscapes to Hoener’s evocative portraits.

Overall, the exhibition not only highlighted the exceptional talent of Connie May and Alice Hoener but also underscored the vibrant and dynamic arts scene thriving within Johnson County. Through their dedication, passion, and creativity, May and Hoener continue to inspire and enrich the local community, leaving an indelible mark on the world of art.
